The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is wrapping up $6.9 million in repairs to the Cleveland West Pier, currently connecting Wendy Park in the Lakefront Reservation to the Historic U.S. Coast Guard Station. Repairs to the West Pier ensure Cleveland Harbor’s viability and contributions to the local and national transportation sector and protect the future of some of the area’s best waterfront recreation opportunities.
Repairs encased 1,320 feet of the 1,430-foot pier with a new concrete overlay, held in place with steel sheet pile. Construction by USACE began on August 5, 2024 and their work is expected to conclude by July 31, 2025.
Once the USACE repair work on the pier is complete, Cleveland Metroparks will install fencing and a pre-cast concrete trough to allow for future utility connections to the Historic U.S. Coast Guard Station. All work is expected to be complete and the pier reopened by December 2025.
The entire pier, the Historic U.S. Coast Guard Station, and a portion of the east end of Wendy Park are closed during construction. Work is being conducted from barges along the Cuyahoga River channel, and should not obstruct commercial and recreational marine traffic, but vessels should proceed with excess caution when navigating near the pier.
"The Station" sailing center at the Historic U.S. Coast Guard station, operated by the Foundry, has temporarily moved operations to North Gordon Park during construction. The Station will return to its original location once construction is complete.
