In 2023, Cleveland Metroparks acquired Barge 225--previously the Hornblowers restaurant and various office spaces--and relocated the vessel to Wildwood Marina at Euclid Creek Reservation on Lake Erie. With the help of a $525,000 grant from KeyBank, the barge will be transformed into a one-of-a-kind floating nature-based education center that will prioritize STEM-based educational programing and feature interactive interpretive exhibits, classroom spaces, community and special event spaces, and a wet lab. Additional fundraising is underway to support the renovation of the vessel, including a $250,000 contribution from Jones Day Foundation.
Cleveland Metroparks team of trained educators will offer public programming with a specific focus on school-aged youth programs, particularly engaging the neighboring communities of Cleveland and Euclid.
The first phase of construction, set to begin in spring 2026, will connect gas and electrical service from shore to the Barge to allow operation of existing mechanical HVAC equipment. It will also include repairs and minor alterations to the first-floor interior. Once completed, this phase will provide opportunities for Cleveland Metroparks staff to allow limited public use and programming on board the Barge.
