    Tigers

Zoo | Wildlife Conservation | Tigers

Tigers are the ultimate symbol of wilderness, but more than 95% of their wild population has disappeared in the last 100 years.

Tiger numbers have decreased by 50% in the past 30 years and four of the nine subspecies of tiger have disappeared. Amur, Sumatran and Malayan tiger populations are all estimated at less than 500 animals. In partnership with the Tiger Conservation Campaign (TCC) we are focusing efforts on the three most threatened tigers, including the endangered Amur tiger in the Russian Far East.

    What We're Doing

Support of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s (WCS) efforts in Russia helps mitigate human-tiger conflict and curb tiger poaching by holding anti-poaching teams accountable, providing incentives for good work, and generating information to improve patrolling efforts.
    • Camera trapping surveys strongly suggest that tiger numbers are increasing at 3 of 4 protected areas where the new anti-poaching methods have been in place the longest.
In partnership with Education for Nature-Vietnam† (ENV) we are working to stop the illegal trade of tigers and tiger products and halt commercial tiger farming in Vietnam. †images on this site may be troubling to sensitive viewers
    • ENV’s National Wildlife Crime Hotline and education awareness campaigns engage the public and help reduce consumer demand for tiger products. Advocacy efforts promote stronger legislation and increased legal protection for tigers. ENV has investigated more than 620 violations involving the trade, transport, possession, selling or advertising of tigers or tiger products since 2008. Investigations resulted in the confiscation of 73 tigers.
In partnership with WildAid we are addressing illegal tiger trade and reducing the demand for tiger parts in targeted consumer markets in Asia.
    • WildAid works with government, business, media partners, and celebrities to encourage public behavior change and reduce demand for wildlife products. In 2014, up to 1 billion viewers watched WildAid PSAs across Asia via 100+ media partners, including China’s largest television network, CCTV, and Vietnam’s largest network, VTV.
