Oh Baby! Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Welcomes Newborn Rhino Calf

After a 15-month pregnancy, Kibibbi, a 14-year-old Eastern black rhino, gave birth to a calf on February 7, 2018! Mom and baby are doing well and have been under constant care by the Zoo's animal care team. For all the behind-the-scenes updates, stay tuned here and Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's social media channels.

IT’S A GIRL! The recently welcomed calf was observed successfully nursing from mom on the first day and has spent much of her time near mom, which is an indicator of a strong bond.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Offers Naming Opportunity for Rhino Calf - Participation supports the Zoo's initiative to end illegal wildlife trade, a main threat to Eastern black rhino conservation. The names are:

    • Nya - meaning friend
    • Dalia - meaning flower
    • Lulu - meaning gem

Each of the names are unique to the Eastern black rhino's native regions in Africa. The calf's name will be selected based on the name that receives the highest donation total. The public can cast their votes through March 1, 2018.

    Introducing, Lulu!

The winning name, which means “gem,” was selected after receiving the largest donation of $1,203. Donations for the naming contest totaled $2,620, which will directly support our efforts to reduce poaching and illegal wildlife trade.
