The book unfolds…word by word….picture by picture. With each turn of the page, 100 years of Cleveland Metroparks history and memories come to life. Started, and wrestled with for the last two years, the pages are now coming to life. Editor Judy MacKeigan, Cleveland Metroparks historian/archivist leads a team of fellow employees in the creation of this Centennial book which will give readers a good glimpse of the first 100 years of Cleveland Metroparks through photos, illustrations and writings.

What seemed like forever and a day of searching through old photos, organizing thoughts, editing text and a lot of discussion, the pages are starting to take shape as seen here on the walls of one facility’s room. A working storyboard is evidence that something big is taking shape. For the next three months Judy writes and proofs…and writes and proofs…and melds the works of various others into pages. Then the proofs are turned over, along with corresponding historic and modern photographs, to designer Sal Perconti to work his artistic magic.

It is so exciting to see the pages of this Centennial coffee-table book take shape. The process will be harried for another 5 months until it is sent off to the printers for final production. We will anxiously await the copies-in-hand to witness the beauty and history of Cleveland Metroparks between the hard covers. These should arrive in time to hit the shelves of our gift shops in early November. Dare I say, I am excited to see the finished product, but am really enjoying the process? Not only is the book growing, but so is the team in their work. I’m not sure what I look forward to most, the finished book or their smiles as they see the fruits of their labor.
Stay tuned for this Centennial treasure coming to Cleveland Metroparks gift shop near you this fall…
