It's patio season. Three words that Clevelanders endure. Polar Vortexes, Siberian Expresses and Arctic Apocalypses and whatever other catch-phrased blast of sub-zero air we have. Some patios have scenic, sprawling views while some are on busy thoroughfares where the people are the scenery. No matter the venue, all are beloved by the city Cleveland more so than any other population.
What if I told you Cleveland had one of the best waterfront patios you'll find anywhere? Now, what if I told you that the best waterfront patio wasn't on the body of water that everyone associates Cleveland with? Not the lake, but the Mighty Cuyahoga is where you can seek out this patio. I'm talking about Merwin's Wharf in Rivergate Park in the "don't call it a comeback" Flats.
An epic patio requires the three S's: size, scenery and scene. First we have size. The Merwin's patio is big enough to fit a massive fireplace, sitdown and cocktail tables, even an oversized Jenga set all in a footprint wrapping around the building itself and connected seamlessly with the interior by the open garage doors of the restaurant. Next, the scenery was voted as the "Best Patio with a View" by Cleveland Magazine. Rowing clubs crewing up and down the river, huge commercial freighters, the skyline of The Land and even yours truly trying my best to look like I know what I'm doing during dragon boat practices are some of the sights you'll see there. If you come in the fall to get your last grasps of patio season, you'll also be treated to some truly awesome foliage views on the hillsides across the river that'll warm your heart faster than your pumpkin spice latte. Finally, scene. This patio is just fun. You just feel great when you're here. It's a getaway with great food, a great beverage selection and a chance to just breath in an atmosphere.
So throw some flip flops and sunglasses on Cleveland, because this is the most wonderful time of the year. Patio on.
