For me, a passion for golf started at an early age, about 8 years old. I can remember getting up at the break of dawn and heading out to Shawnee Hills Golf course for my golf league, on the par 3 course. I would go play 9 holes and be clamoring for more, I was just getting warmed up. From there I would go hit a bucket or two of balls at the driving range. This became a weekly summer routine that I wish I could have done every single day! In my youth, golf was a very competitive game and I played because I wanted to win. As I have grown older the love of the game is still there, just in a different way.
On cold March (can't believe it's already March!) days like today, I loath for the hot and humid Cleveland summers on the golf course. Whether it is playing 9 or 18 at Big Met or hitting a bucket of balls at Sleepy Hollow, golf has become a sanctuary for me. A bit of the competitive nature is still there, but now the game is much more simple. It is a stress reliever, a way for me to take a break from the hectic day to day, and gain a sense of calm. There is just something about being in the middle of the fairway (or most of the time, the rough) with the sun beating down, the smell of the fresh cut grass and the tranquil serenity that cannot be vanquished.
Golf is truly for anyone. Everybody can play golf. I by no means am a great golfer, I play because it is relaxing, gets me outside and a way to spend time with friends. It is never too late to pick up the game of golf.
Cleveland Metroparks has eight golf courses, each of which cater to different skill levels, but all of which are some of the best in the state and even country. Recently, Sleepy Hollow was named the top municipal course in Ohio and the 14th best municipal course in the country! Big Met is the most played course in Ohio!
For me it is golf and for others it is a hike at North Chagrin Reservation, but that is the beauty of the Cleveland Metroparks System. It is a way to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and even just for a few minutes, we can get away and enjoy nature.
I promise that this snow will eventually melt and spring is just around the corner. Cleveland Metroparks Golf Opening Day is March, 18 so start dusting off those clubs...
