The grass is green, the trees are budding and spring is finally here! With the arrival of spring, we can finally get back outside and enjoy the beauty that Cleveland has to offer this time of year.
This year I decided to get fitted for new clubs at Sleepy Hollow. My golf clubs were about six years old and no help to my already average game. This turned out to be the best decision I could have made to help my game.
I am an average golfer at best. I have never been fitted for golf clubs before this year, basically because I did not think it was necessary. Man, was I wrong.
A couple of months ago, I set up a time with Sleepy Hollow Golf Pro John Fiander. We met on a Saturday at the driving range and the entire process only took about an hour.
We started by measuring the distance from your hands to the ground in order to help determine club length. Next, looked at how the club sits on the ground when you get in your stance. After that, hit a few balls, as John observes your swing, trajectory, consistency etc. Finally, John puts a device on the club to measure your swing speed. I hit a few balls with the device and then we ran the numbers in the computer.
I hit 3 or 4 different brands of clubs to see which ones I thought felt the best. As a side note, I came into this process with my mind made up on which clubs I wanted to get, before ever hitting them.
After going over the results on the computer John made a recommendation on the specs of the club: ½” extended shaft, extra stiff shaft, 1 layer of built up grip, and 2 degrees upright (irons). We discussed which clubs felt the best and I determined that I liked the Mizuno JPX 850 irons the best (not the original Callaway’s I thought I wanted.)
We did all of this in an hour! I never would have thought that I needed my clubs to be customized. I have played twice this year with my new clubs and the results are tremendous. I am hitting the ball further, straighter, more consistently and I feel comfortable. I would recommend anyone get their clubs fitted. Whether you are an everyday golfer or the casual golfer it is well worth it!
