Do you know what kind of bug this is? Doesn't seem to fly. Have many in grass/weeds in yard.
Right off the bat, I do not know exactly what kind of “bug” this is, or species. I'm going to place your unknown creature into scientific categories from broad to more narrow (taxonomy). We'll see how far I can get...
Order: Coleoptera (beetles)
You can see the two antennae, three body segments (head, thorax, abdomen), and six legs. It is "pregnant" or more fittingly called gravid; hence the swollen abdomen. You mentioned that it does not fly. This could be true at the moment, but it DOES have wings. A pair is hidden under the hardened shell-like green covers (called elytra) that are floating above the abdomen.
Give me one day to crack the code and key out the insect. But at least you know it's a gravid beetle!

Marty-- Thank you. I look forward to hearing from you. You don't think it would be harmful to my dog? ----Melanie
Melanie-- It's a type of Leaf Beetle: Gastrophysa polygoni
. The species is not considered noxious, so your pup is safe. This was a tricky one. ---- Thanks! Marty
