This is just one of the really cool and unique experiences that Cleveland Metroparks offers to the community. All you have to do is show up at the Brecksville or North Chagrin Reservations at the designated times and they provide the birdseed. Then you patiently (well sort of) wait for these beautiful black, white and gray birds to land in your hand and eat.
The Brecksville Reservation is closest to me, so that is where I headed. If you've never been to the Brecksville Nature Center, it's peacefully nestled in the woods, just a short jaunt from the parking lot. I was overcome by the silence that surrounded the area, even with the ten or so people that stood waiting for the chickadees. There is a special type of tranquility that comes with spending time in nature, and something extra wonderful about getting this close to wildlife. I joined the group and held my hand out as still as I could manage. Patience is not one of my strong suits, but when the first bird finally landed on my hand I realized it was well worth the wait.
Many times when we advertise this event, pictures of young children with looks of wonder on their faces appear front and center. I wasn't sure if I would be the only adult stopping to feed the birds, but that was hardly the case. This activity is truly for everyone and provides an opportunity to get up close and personal to a beautiful part of nature.
If I've convinced you that
Hand Feed a Chickadee is worth the trip, you can visit Brecksville Nature Center through February 28th to try it for yourself. North Chagrin offers additional
chickadee opportunities.
Helpful Tips: Be patient and stand very still. Hold your hand out flat. Go when the weather is cold and snowy (if possible), as it is harder for the birds to find food so they are more likely to stop by for a snack in your hand.
