Terrain/Distance: Camping will be in the grassy field at Redwing Picnic Area.
Optional activities will take you throughout Hinckley Reservation requiring you to drive to Hinckley Lake and Whipp’s Ledges. These activities will be on the grass, inside Redwing Picnic Area, at Hinckley Lake (a flatwater paddling environment), and at Whipp’s Ledges (natural surface terrain with steep grades, exposed cliff edges, and rocks). Access to the restrooms at Redwing Picnic Area is along a paved path.

Join us for a fun campout at Redwing Picnic Area & throughout all of Hinckley Reservation as you have the opportunity to try paddling, rock climbing, and camping. Wake up Sunday for a simple, quick breakfast provided by Cleveland Metroparks before you head out to explore the park with a self-guided scavenger hunt or head down to the lake to paddle again. While there is time set aside for dinner later in the evening, it is important that throughout the day you and your group have ample water and food to keep you energized and ready.
Registration Timeslots:
To guarantee everyone has the opportunity to try all of the activities at the campout, guests MUST register for specific timeslots. Review the timeslots below, and register for the color that has the activities in the order of your preference. You won’t be able to change timeslots once registered.
If you wish to be with specific people/your group for all of the activities, then everyone MUST register for the same timeslot. We recommend you register your group at the same time. If a certain color is sold out, we cannot add anyone else to it. Children under the age of 18 must be with an accompanying adult at all times to participate in the activities.
The campout begins at 1 p.m. Please arrive at the designated location for your timeslot with a completed waiver. (Waivers can be available onsite. Please arrive early if you need to complete one. All minors must have waivers completed by their parents/legal guardian).

Each of the sessions includes the following:
- Paddling: Kayaking, canoeing, and stand up paddleboarding will be available during your session on the water giving you and your family the opportunity to try multiple types of boats.
- Rock Climbing: Come put your hands on all things rock climbing. During this session, you will have the opportunity to climb the rocks and get to know all the gear you need.
- Camp set-up: During this section, it your turn to make sure your tent and camp are in tip-top shape for the night. Other activities will be available onsite including your chance to begin a self-guided scavenger hunt!

8:30 - 9 p.m. Fire building clinic & contest
9 p.m. Sunset (Make sure all food is secured for the night).
9:15 p.m. Campfire, s'mores - provided by Cleveland Metroparks
10 p.m. Quiet Time - Please be respectful of all campers
Day 2
6:15 a.m. Sunrise
7:30 a.m. Light Breakfast provided by Cleveland Metroparks
8-11 a.m. Open Paddling Session
8:30- 10:30 a.m. Scavenger hunt at Worden’s Ledges
11 a.m. Departure - See you next time!
All tents MUST be taken down by 11 a.m.
Explore on your own ideas
- Grab a snack at Hinckley Lake Boathouse & Store.
- Go swimming at Hinckley Spillway. (The beach will only be guarded during regular lifeguard hours, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.)
- Take a hike or bring a bike to ride on the All Purpose Trail.
- Bring a rod and go fishing.
- Play sand volleyball.
- Bring your own games to play in the field.
Suggested Packing List
- Sleeping system: Tent, sleeping bag/blankets, sleeping pad/air mattress, pillow
- Extra change of clothes, warm layers for evening/morning (reference the 3Ws of layering for more information about how to dress), pajamas, rain gear/poncho (just in case), toiletries.
- Swimwear and lifejacket. (Lifejackets provided for paddling related programs).
- Headlamp/flashlight
- Bug spray, sunscreen
- Refillable water bottle
- Camp chair/blankets for fire
- Food/items to cook food for meals.
- Additional items to enjoy the park: book, camera, games, etc.
Food
- Food is not provided on Saturday. Please plan to bring your own.
- While there is time set aside for dinner later in the evening Saturday, it is important that throughout the day you and your group have ample water and food to keep you energized and ready.
- Food Storage Guidelines:
Remember to follow Leave No Trace principles when storing your food for the night. This includes making sure all food is either stored in your car or small animal (chipmunk, squirrel, raccoon, etc.) proof container such as a cooler with tight straps around it. DON’T store food in your tent. Staff will be available onsite to assist you with any of this.
- Don’t worry about the s ’mores; we will make sure to have plenty for everyone.
- If you feel more comfortable bringing your own supplies, you may do that as well.
- A light breakfast will be provided in the morning.

- …must meet minimum age and pre-trip meeting requirements for each individual program.
- …must meet program fee requirements for each individual program.
- …must be able to remain adequately hydrated, fed, and properly dressed in order to avoid environmental injuries such as hypothermia, heat-related illnesses, sunburn, and frostbite.
- …must refrain from use of alcohol and tobacco before or during outdoor recreation activities and any illegal drugs throughout the duration of a program.
- …must be able, either alone or with the aid of a personal care attendant, or through arrangements outlined on the Request for Administration of Medication Form or an Individual Medication Plan to manage, administer and protect any prescription medications currently prescribed to him or her. All medications, including over-the-counter medications shall be listed as required on the Medical Information portion of the registration materials.
- …must be able, either alone, with the aid of an augmentative communication device, or a personal care attendant to follow directions and communicate needs.
- …must not exceed manufacturers’ maximum recommended weight limit for equipment being used.
- …must be able to manage personal mobility either alone, with a reasonable amount of assistance, with the aid of a personal care attendant, or with adaptive equipment.
- …must be able to independently wear and maintain wearing all safety equipment correctly.
- …must be able, in the event of an unexpected capsize, to breathe independently and maintain a seal with their mouth (i.e. not require medical devices to sustain breathing), and independently demonstrate the ability to self-right him or herself from face down to face up position while wearing the appropriate PFD.
- …must be able to independently hold their head and neck upright (without restraints), in order to maintain proper body positioning, avoid an unexpected capsize, and freely exit watercraft.
- …must be able to reenter the watercraft in deep water independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance.
