      Fly Fishing 1: Introduction*

      Take your skills to the next level with dry land casting before casting on the water in Fly Fishing 2: Supplemental Skills. Jeff Liskay will provide information for the beginner or novice angler regarding basic fly fishing equipment, knot tying, dry land casting, introduction to flies, and all fishing techniques A to Z. *Also see event listing on Cleveland Metroparks Facebook.

      • Terrain: Participants will cast on a flat, grassy area with less than a ΒΌ mile hike.

      Directions: Program meets at Cottonwood Reserved Shelter.
      Age: 12 & over (Minors between the ages of 12-17 MUST have a registered and participating adult)   
      Fee: $25 per person (All guests MUST register)

      Terrain/Distance: Participants will cast on a flat, grassy area with less than a ¼ mile hike.

      Combines classroom and dry land casting on the parks’ grassy areas to introduce you to basic fly fishing equipment and fly casting techniques. A large portion of the class will be dedicated to mastering fly fishing specific knots. No fishing license required since you’ll be dry land casting. This will help prepare you for Fly Fishing 2: Supplemental Skills that involves in water casting.  Fly rods and reels will be provided.  Feel free to bring your own equipment. The entire program will be spent outside; please dress appropriately for the weather. Dressing in non-cotton layers is encouraged.   Please bring a completed waiver and review the equipment list. Classes will begin promptly, so plan to arrive early.

      General Essential Eligibility Requirements that all participants must meet. A participant….
      • …must meet minimum age and pre-trip meeting requirements for each individual program.
      • …must meet program fee requirements for each individual program.
      • …must be able to remain adequately hydrated, fed, and properly dressed in order to avoid environmental injuries such as hypothermia, heat-related illnesses, sunburn, and frostbite.
      • …must refrain from use of alcohol and tobacco before or during outdoor recreation activities and any illegal drugs throughout the duration of a program.
      • …must be able, either alone or with the aid of a personal care attendant, or through arrangements outlined on the Request for Administration of Medication Form or an Individual Medication Plan to manage, administer and protect any prescription medications currently prescribed to him or her. All medications, including over-the-counter medications shall be listed as required on the Medical Information portion of the registration materials.
      • …must be able, either alone, with the aid of an augmentative communication device, or a personal care attendant to follow directions and communicate needs.
      •  …must not exceed manufacturers’ maximum recommended weight limit for equipment being used.
      • …must be able to manage personal mobility either alone, with a reasonable amount of assistance, with the aid of a personal care attendant, or with adaptive equipment. 
      •  …must be able to independently wear and maintain wearing all safety equipment correctly.

       

      Cleveland Metroparks staff can adapt many programs to be accessible to anyone who would like to participate assuming they meet the essential eligibility criteria. Reasonable accommodation can also be made. Please make a request at the time of registration but no later than 72 business hours prior to the program.
