      American Red Cross Pool/Waterfront Lifeguard Training

      The American Red Cross Pool/Waterfront Lifeguarding blended learning course teaches participants the knowledge and skills to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies, prevent drowning and injuries.  Upon successful completion, participants receive American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications.

      Registration deadline is three days prior to the start of the class.




      Prerequisites:

      1. Participants must be 16 years old on or before the last day of the course
      2. Participants must complete the on-line and on-site training portions of the class
      3. Participants must:
        • Swim 550 yards continuosly demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing.  Candidates must demonstrate the ability to swim both the front crawl and breastroke.  Swimming on the back or side is not allowed.  Swim goggles are allowed.
        • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.  Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
        • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
          • Starting in the water swim 20 yards using front crawl or breastroke.  The face may be in or out of the water for this.  Swim goggles are not allowed.
          • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
          • Return to the surface and swim 20 yeards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object.
          • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps
        • Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 to 7 feet of water, surfact, and swim 5 yards to the side of the pool.




      Registration/Cancellation Policy:

      • By registering, you acknowledge that you have read and understand the cancellation policy:
        • Program fees and deposits are not refundable or transferable unless Cleveland Metroparks finds it necessary to cancel a program. Participants assume risk of all changes in personal health and affairs. 
        • If Cleveland Metroparks cancels a program, the cancellation will be posted on the registration page for that program.  For programs other than races, participants will also be notified by e-mail and/or phone.  
      • With our professionally trained staff and ability to make equipment adaptations, most programs are accessible to anyone who would like to participate assuming they meet the essential eligibility criteria. If you need an accommodation, please make a request two weeks before but no later than 72 hours prior to the program, activity, or event.

       

      Cleveland Metroparks staff can adapt many programs to be accessible to anyone who would like to participate assuming they meet the essential eligibility criteria. Reasonable accommodation can also be made. Please make a request at the time of registration but no later than 72 business hours prior to the program.
