      Try-It: Shelter Building/Fire Building

Fire and shelter building are two of the most important skills when spending time in the woods. Choosing the right knot to use, tree to pick, and wood to burn are all necessary skills. Join Cleveland Metroparks as you master those skills. Whether it’s a log cabin fire or an A-frame tarp, the class will have you on your way to outdoor mastery.

During this program, guests will be participating in all acts of fire and shelter building. Fire building will include the gathering of wood, exploring different tinder and kindling options, and the most common building techniques. Guests will be allowed to build and light their own small fires. Shelters and the knots required to erect them will be covered in detail. The shelters will consist of tarps. While the principles are the same, no organic material will be used in the building of the shelters. Fire Building materials from home, such as favorite fire starters, are encouraged but not required.  Reference the 3Ws of layering for more information about how to dress. Classes will begin promptly, so plan to arrive early. Please bring a completed waiver and review the participant equipment list.
