Take the first step towards better health and explore new trails with Cleveland Metroparks Walking Works Program presented by Medical Mutual.

Research shows walking leads to better health. Walking three to five times a week helps improve cardiovascular fitness, increases circulation, helps control weight, blood and cholesterol levels, and improves an overall feeling of well-being. Research also shows that if you increase the number of calories burned by just 2,000 a week it can lead to a longer life. For these reasons, Medical Mutual has partnered with Cleveland Metroparks to become the proud Presenting Sponsor of Walking Works.

Walking Works is a program that is aligned with our strategic plan and offers yet another activity that supports health and wellness. Medical Mutual, also a promoter of health, wellness and preventative lifestyles is an ideal partner for this program, said Brian Zimmerman, CEO of Cleveland Metroparks. We have a long-standing relationship with Medical Mutual and it is exciting to see them support a program that epitomizes the mission of Cleveland Metroparks.

Walking Works participants can feel better while discovering the wonders of nature. Natural green spaces are significant contributors to enhancing the quality of life of a community, said Jared Chaney, EVP of Medical Mutual, and we are fortunate to have over 23,000 acres of the Emerald Necklace' as the crown jewel of our region.

Cleveland Metroparks Walking Works participants hike at least eight of 13 designated trails on their own through October 31 -- it's fun and easy.  After completing each walk, date the Walking Works form. Complete at least eight walks and return the form to Cleveland Metroparks to receive this year's Walking Works walking stick shield and a voucher good for a free picnic lunch for four at Wayside Furniture Caf at 1367 Canton Road, Akron.

This year take an easy hike in Bedford, Big Creek, Garfield Park, Huntington, Ohio & Erie Canal and West Creek reservations. Moderate walkers can hit the trails in Brecksville, Euclid Creek, Hinckley, North Chagrin and South Chagrin reservations. Those looking for a more difficult hike will appreciate the challenging hikes in Mill Stream Run and Rocky River reservations.

Want to walk with others while learning about the natural features of the trails? Naturalist-led hikes along the designated trails will be available through October.

For a list of the designated hikes, directions, naturalist-led hikes and to download the Walking Works form, visit clevelandmetroparks.com. Walking Works forms are also available at Cleveland Metroparks Nature Centers. Walking Works is presented by Medical Mutual.
