One of the more common New Year's resolutions is to give back to the community through volunteer work. In 2013, more than 600 volunteers contributed more than 51,000 hours of service to Cleveland Metroparks Zoo; and, the Zoo is currently recruiting for additional volunteers.
The Zoo offers diverse volunteer opportunities for individuals 18 years and older who are able to commit to 40 hours of service per year. Volunteers serve in various capacities, including greeting guests and providing information at exhibits and other areas throughout the Zoo. The deadline for adult volunteer applications is March 1.
What volunteers do at the Zoo:
Information Stations
Volunteers greet visitors, answer questions and direct visitors to various locations around the Zoo.
Special Events
Assist guests and staff members at Zoo-hosted special events. These events can be large or small, from Boo at the Zoo to Senior Safari.
Education Programs
Volunteers assist staff with activities during winter and summer overnight programs, including crafts, face painting and puppet shows.
Vet Bags
Volunteers conduct educational programs at the Zoo's Sarah Allison Steffee Center of Zoological Medicine where guests learn what it's like to be a zoo veterinarian.
Zoo Crew
Teens ages 13 to 17, assist the Education Division by participating in on-site and off-site programs and activities, including gardening projects at local schools, butterfly monitoring and beach cleanups. Each member of the Zoo Crew is a dedicated Zoo ambassador and increases visitor and public awareness of the importance of conservation and protecting the environment. Interested applicants must complete an application form by Friday, March 7. For more information, visit clevelandmetroparks.com/Zoo/Education-Opportunities/15.aspx.
