Come out of hibernation and celebrate Groundhog Day, February 2, with Cleveland Metroparks! According to folklore, it's the official day the groundhog - also called a woodchuck - awakes from hibernation, climbs out of its burrow and takes a look around. If the groundhog sees its shadow, it means six more weeks of winter and the groundhog (along with everyone else!) hunkers down for six more weeks of cold weather. If the groundhog doesn't see its shadow, then it's a sign that an early spring is on the way. Let the celebration begin by breaking out the flip-flops and Bermuda shorts!
Spend Groundhog Day with Cleveland Metroparks and learn interesting facts, hear fascinating folklore and make fun crafts. The following programs are free and suitable for all ages:
Drop-In Discovery: Groundhogs
10 a.m. to noon
Brecksville Nature Center � Brecksville Reservation
Stop by and learn about groundhogs and their interesting adaptations. A naturalist will be on hand to answer all your questions. Kids can create a cool groundhog craft and play a game of groundhog bean bag toss. Groundhog Day Afternoon Hike
1 - 2 p.m.
Aqueduct Gateway & Trailhead � Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation
On this two mile hike (paved surface), a naturalist leads a discussion about Groundhog Day weather predictions. Although there's no guarantee of spotting a groundhog, keep a lookout for other active animals and birds. Aqueduct Gateway & Trailhead is located off Canal Road in Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation, between E.71st Street and Warner Road in Cuyahoga Heights.
