It seems like everyone enjoys trains, but kids love hearing the whistle blow the most! Since trains made their debut, they have steamed their way into hearts across the nation.
Cleveland Metroparks invites all train lovers to the annual, free Train Day event on Saturday, June 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at CanalWay Center in Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation in Cuyahoga Hts., just below the massive, 2,000-foot long bridge that carries more than 40 trains a day across the valley.
Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities throughout the day, including model train exhibits. Visit with railroad-related organizations and vendors, take a guided walk to find out what's in the train cars rumbling overhead, enjoy music by Foster Brown at noon and 2 p.m., crafts and face painting, and more!
Children can also enjoy train-themed puppet shows at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m., and say hello to Conrad the Conductor! And, enjoy a kid's trackless train or pedal car rides ($2/person or 2 for $3), unique train items for sale at the Nature Shop, and refreshments for sale.
Event-goers can also stroll down the Hobo Trail to learn the markings these American travelers used to communicate with other hobos. Over 30 hobo markings will be displayed along the self-guided hobo trail. These markings were used as sources of communication from one hobo to the next and it was the best for a rail rider to know if a kindhearted lady with a place to sleep in her barn or a bad tempered man with bad intentions lived in a house. These marks helped many a hobo make it to the next night.
CanalWay Center is located on Whittlesey Way, off the East 49th Street entrance of Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation, between Grant Avenue and Canal Road in Cuyahoga Heights - just off the I-77/Grant Avenue exit.
