Nature-lovers are alive and well and enjoying the great outdoors in Greater Cleveland with 16,286,944 recreation visits to Cleveland Metroparks recorded in 2012, up from 15,567,093 visits reported in 2011. Also popular are the Park District Outdoor Education programs with attendance of 474,595 in 2012, up from 437,509 reported in 2011.
Good weather in 2012 prompted golfers to hit the links at Cleveland Metroparks eight golf courses, increasing rounds of golf from 305,494 in 2011 to 372,811 rounds in 2012.
In 2012, 210 acres were added to Cleveland Metroparks �Emerald Necklace.� One of the newest jewels is Rivergate, a 2.8-acre green recreational oasis in the center of Cleveland's Flats District that will serve as Cleveland Metroparks recreational hub along the Cuyahoga River.
Cleveland Metroparks and the City of North Royalton partnered on the acquisition of the 14.7-acre Aukerman Farm at the corner of Valley Parkway and York Road in Brecksville Reservation with plans to return the property to a natural condition with a trail network. While on the west side of the �Emerald Necklace,� Cleveland Metroparks received a donation of 20.4 acres of undeveloped property to establish a wetland in Bradley Woods Reservation from Cuyahoga County.
Acacia Reservation, became Cleveland Metroparks 17th reservation in December 2012. A former golf course, Acacia is a 155-acre green oasis located in the City of Lyndhurst. The west branch of Euclid Creek flows northwestward through Acacia Reservation to join the main branch in Euclid Creek Reservation. Cleveland Metroparks is restoring the property to a natural condition and currently features a 1.7-mile paved loop trail.
October 7, 2012 marked the 25th anniversary of Garfield Park Nature Center. The anniversary was honored by a free event highlighting the nature and local history of the reservation by taking a step back to 1987. A display of the first 25 years and a History of Garfield Park Walking Tour delighted visitors. Visitors ended the day with an Anniversary Cookie Celebration.
From November 17 to 19, 2012, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo celebrated the 20th anniversary of The RainForest with special events, activities and giveaways. The RainForest was the Zoo's first themed immersion exhibit and is home to more than 10,000 plants and 600 animals. The two-story RainForest helps visitors understand the importance of the world's rainforests and why conserving them is vital to the earth's ecosystems.
