Whoever said nice guys finish last clearly never met Cleveland
Metroparks Treasurer, David Kuntz. In his nomination for
Crain's 2012 CFO of the Year Award, Kuntz is described as the
quintessential nice guy' who shouldn't finish last, which not
only embodies Kuntz, but the work he produces.
David Kuntz recently won a Crain's 2012 CFO of the Year Award
(Medium Non-Profit/Government Category). An independent panel of
judges reviewed the nominees, taking into account the following:
candidate background, including unique qualities and
accomplishments; leadership in such areas as strategic planning and
vision, business challenges, risk management and succession
planning; financial management, including monetary growth, market
share gains, profitability, stability, strategic transaction and
commitment to accounting standards; and external contributions
(philanthropic, community, financial industry and board of
directors service).
As the top fiscal officer of Cleveland Metroparks, Kuntz has
achieved perfect state audits five years in a row. This track
record had not been achieved in the Park District's 95-year
history. Cleveland Metroparks was also the only governmental
agency in Ohio and only park district in the United States to
receive the National Purchasing Institutes 2012 Achievement of
Excellence in Procurement Award.
While managing all of the Park District's financial affairs,
including long and short-term budgets, cash receipts, auditing,
financial reporting, purchasing, disbursements, fixed assets,
information systems, and payroll, Kuntz still found time to lead
and develop a number of other efforts. Kuntz began the
development of an internal audit function, enhanced revenue
procedures for a variety of business types, implemented financial
procedures mandated by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board,
developed a procurement card program, and instituted an online
accounting manual.
As a public government organization, Cleveland Metroparks
upholds the integrity of not only the environment, but its
financial systems as well. For years, David Kuntz, of Parma, has
assured that Cleveland Metroparks maintains its reputation as a
pillar of financial integrity.
