    Purchase Heirloom Plants At Cleveland Metroparks "Farm & Garden Day"

    Heirloom plants are described as �open-pollinated
    and grown in an earlier era.�  Some heirlooms are hundreds of
    years old, and others originated around the turn of the
    20th century.  Since heirloom plants are not
    hybridized, they tend to be better tasting crops.



    Purchase heirloom plants at Cleveland Metroparks
    �Farm & Garden Day� event on Saturday, June 2 from 11 a.m. to 4
    p.m. at Garfield Park Nature Center in Garfield Park Reservation in
    Garfield Hts.



    New this year, the Heirloom Plants, available for sale include:
    orange, yellow, red, and green peppers, blue and red kale,
    broccoli, beefsteak, cherry and celebrity tomatoes, red leaf and
    romaine lettuce, Swiss chard, white bok choy, red leaf and lavewa
    spinach, zucchini, yellow and spaghetti squash, cantaloupe, moon
    and star watermelon, and more.



    Event-goers can enjoy live farms animals, including cattle and a
    petting area with horses, chickens, rabbits and goats. 
    Visitors can sample hand-churned butter and popcorn at the
    tasting-stations, participate in the egg and sack races, view farm
    equipment, and take the hay-wagon shuttles.  Kids can enjoy
    hands-on crafts, activities, games and jumping in huge mounds of
    straw and throwing fistfuls in the air!



    Plus, local vendors and exhibitors will be on-site, including
    Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District, Crystal Moon Acres, Garfield
    Heights Historical Society, Gaughn Bee Dancin', Handrosh Farms, OSU
    Master Gardeners, and Spring Mist Farms.



    �Farm & Garden Day� also features presentations and
    demonstrations:




    • Beekeeping Demonstration at 11:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m.


    • Composting Presentation at 12:15 and 2:30 p.m.


    • Container Vegetable Gardening Presentation at 1 and 3:15
      p.m.



    Visitors can also enjoy horse-drawn wagon rides for $2/person,
    too. 



    And, refreshments will be available for purchase.



    Garfield Park Nature Center is located off the Broadway Avenue
    entrance of Garfield Park Reservation in Garfield Heights - north
    of the I-480/Broadway Avenue exit.
