The summer season begins in June. Bright skies and beautiful
weather make it a perfect time for birding programs throughout
Cleveland Metroparks.
The free birds walks and programs in June include:
Sunday Bird Walk
Sunday, June 3 � 9 - 11 a.m.
Strawberry Picnic Area parking lot � North Chagrin
Reservation
June marks the official time when breeding bird activity is
documented. Take a 2-mile walk while searching the pines and
hemlocks for common and some not so common nesting birds of North
Chagrin Reservation. Some binoculars are available for loan.
Strawberry Picnic Area is located off Buttermilk Falls Parkway, off
the Strawberry Lane entrance of North Chagrin Reservation, off SOM
Center Road/Route 91 in Willoughby Hills. For more information,

Monthly Morning With The Birds

River Reservation
Join a naturalist for a Saturday morning bird hike and watch for
birds in the woods and pond near Rocky River Nature Center. Bring
binoculars and favorite field guide, if available. Rocky River
Nature Center is located at 24000 Valley Parkway in Rocky River
Reservation, north of Cedar Point Road in North Olmsted. For more

MAPS Banding Program

Lower 40 Loop Trail � Ohio & Erie Canal
Reservation
Catch and band migrant birds, such as gray catbirds and yellow
warblers, on their nesting grounds. The Monitoring Avian
Productivity and Survivorship Program (MAPS) is a volunteer bird
banding program. The comparison group study was last conducted
1998-2002 and now, 10 years later, it is being repeated. Birds are
more active in the early morning, so stopping by early is better
than later. Banding will be canceled if raining. Lower 40 Loop
Trail is located off Canal Road in Ohio & Erie Canal

Guide To MAPS Program

Meet a CanalWay Center staff member bright and early and hike
down to the Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship Program
(MAPS) site. Visit with volunteer bird banders and ask questions.
Discover which birds are nesting in the valley this summer.
CanalWay Center is located on Whittlesey Way, off the East
49th Street entrance of Ohio & Erie Canal

Huntington Reservation is a great lakeside place to catch
glimpses of warblers, flycatchers and other summer birds. Join
Naturalist Bethany Majeski for a fun 1.5-mile hike appealing both
to beginning and experienced birders. Wolf Picnic Area is located
off Porter Creek Drive in Huntington Reservation, off Wolf Road in

Urban Bird Count

Garfield Park Nature Center � Garfield Park
Reservation
No experience necessary! Counting urban birds isn't just for
experienced birders. Learn which birds typically live in urban
areas and help tally their numbers. The results will be part of
Cornell University's 2012 Urban Bird Study. Garfield Park Nature
Center is located off Mill Creek Lane, off the Broadway Avenue
entrance of Garfield Park Reservation in Garfield Heights. For more
