    Want to learn the skills necessary for becoming an outdoor
    recreation enthusiast? Join Cleveland Metroparks Institute of the
    Great Outdoors for upcoming �Outdoor Recreation Skills�
    courses!



    Cleveland Metroparks Institute of the Great Outdoors (IGO)
    provides a wide range of outdoor recreational classes to people of
    all abilities. Participants can enjoy the knowledge and expertise
    of seasoned instructors with all IGO courses and have fun at the
    same time with the following �Outdoor Recreation Skills'
    classes:



    How to Survive Just About Anything:



    Natural disasters have been on the minds of many people lately.
    With proper planning and the right kit, you can stand a greater
    chance of surviving winter storms, tornadoes, floods and other
    disasters. Participants get resources to begin making their own
    disaster kits for home and on the road and discover how to reuse
    old camping gear. Late fee applies after March 28.




    Ages:                    
    16 years & up



    Date / Location:   April 11 � 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
    � Garfield Park Nature Center




    Cost:                    
    $15 ($20 for late registration)



     



    Backpacking Basics for Women:



    Ladies can explore the sport of backpacking without being
    uncomfortable learning with a bunch of guys.  Join female
    staff to discuss the basics to have a safe and enjoyable
    backcountry experience, including female-specific gear options.
    Other important topics include tents, backpacks and other gear;
    water treatment; and outdoor ethics. Late fee applies after March
    14 & April 5 respectively.

    Date / Location:   March 28 � 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
    � Rocky River Nature Center

    Cost:                    
    $10 ($15 for late registration)



     



    First Aid / CPR /AED Class:



    This class combines the updated curriculum established by the
    American Red Cross and teaches participants skills to become better
    equipped to respond to first aid emergencies. Lessons include:
    standard first aid; CPR for infants; and CPR/AED for adult and
    child. Upon completion of this course, participants will be
    qualified to receive an American Red Cross certification good for
    two years. Late registration fee applies after April 6.



    Activity level:      easy (must
    meet ARC requirements)

    16 years & up



    Date / Location:   April 22 � noon - 6 p.m. �

    Cost:                    
    $110 (includes certification card and skill card) ($115 for late
    registration)



     



    Backpacking Basics:



    Whether you're a �gearhead� or just want to see what's new for
    2012, this class is for you. Enjoy learning the basics to have a
    safe and enjoyable backcountry experience before investing in
    expensive gear. IGO's knowledgeable staff will cover important
    topics such as tents, backpacks and other gear; water treatment;
    and outdoor ethics during this relaxing classroom session. Late
    registration fee applies after April 11.

    14 years & up



    Date / Location:   April 25 � 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
    � Rocky River Nature Center




    Cost:                    
    $10 ($15 for late registration)



     



    Wilderness First Aid:



    Join IGO staff for a 2-day workshop to learn wilderness first
    aid skills. Designed specifically for groups and their leaders, the
    workshop stresses preparedness for first aid emergencies when help
    is an hour or more away. The curriculum includes assessment and
    treatment of specific injuries, long-term patient care and more.
    Scout leaders are encouraged to attend. Class meets Boy Scouts of
    America requirements for backcountry training. Late registration
    fee applies after April 19.

    14 years & up



    Date / Location:   May 5 - 6 � 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
    � Intergrove Lodge, North Chagrin Reservation




    Cost:                    
    $195 (includes lunch, instruction text and first aid supplies)
    ($200 for late registration)



     



    Safety in Bear Country:



    Of all the animals in the North American wilderness, few command
    as much respect, fear or interest as bears. Spend an evening
    getting a behind the scenes tour of the bear area at Cleveland
    Metroparks Zoo, and enjoy a presentation on how to stay safe while
    visiting �bear country.� Participate in a live video session with a
    leading expert on bear ecology and behavior, too. Staff will dispel
    some common bear myths and learn how to safely enjoy outdoor
    activities in bear country. No registration after April 30.

    13 years & up

    Reinberger Education Center, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo




    Cost:                    
    $25 (includes snacks & beverages) ($30 for late
    registration)
