Cleveland Metroparks Ranger Department announced that one of its
three police K-9s, Radar, recently received the Tracking Award from
the German Shepherd Dog Club of Northern Ohio, Inc.
The committee selected Radar because of his successful criminal
search that aided Newburgh Heights Police Department in July
2011.
The Ranger K-9 Unit received a request from the Newburgh Heights
Police Department to track two males who fled on foot after dumping
a stolen vehicle. The suspects abandoned the vehicle and ran into
Cleveland Metroparks Washington Reservation.
K-9 Radar and his handler, Lieutenant Sean Flanigan, were
dispatched to the area. Radar was given the command to track
and headed west through the reservation.
After Radar tracked for over 1/5 mile and located two males
matching the description hiding behind a tree, the Newburgh Heights
police placed them both under arrest.
This marks the fourth award Radar received from The German
Shepherd Dog Club of Northern Ohio, Inc. In 2004 and 2005, he
received the Narcotics Detection Award and the 2006 award for
Pursuit.
This is another good example of how the Ranger K-9 Unit
provides quality services to not only park visitors, but also to
the Greater Cleveland Community, remarked Gregory M. Loftus, chief
of rangers.
