This past weekend (July 28 and 29), the competition
was fierce at two of Cleveland Metroparks 18-hole golf courses,
with amateur golfers from the Greater Cleveland area battling for
the 36-hole Course Championship titles at Sleepy Hollow and Shawnee
    Hills golf courses.

In addition to the title at the individual courses, golfers were
vying for the chance to qualify in the annual Greater Cleveland
    Amateur Championship.

The Course Champions were held the previous weekend at Manakiki
and Big Met golf courses, and now the field is set for the Greater
Cleveland Amateur Championship.  The champions and qualifiers
from the four Course Championships get the opportunity to compete
in the 54-hole Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship on August 10
thru 12 at Manakiki Golf Course in Willoughby Hills.

Along with Cleveland Metroparks course champions and qualifiers,
golfers can also earn an exemption through the Northern Ohio Golf
Association and the Akron District Golf Association to play in the
Amateur Championship. Winners and qualifiers of several past local
tournaments are also exempt, including Cleveland Metroparks 2011
Amateur Champions, the Northeast Ohio Amateur, the Summit County
Amateur, the ICPGA Open, and players ranked in the Top 10 from the
Player of the Year points list of the NOGA, CGA and the ADGA.

Some of the highlights of the 2012 36-hole course tournaments at
Sleepy Hollow and Shawnee Hills include:

At Sleepy Hollow, scores were generally higher than in
previous years' tournaments, but the Champion, Pete Skirpstas of
Medina, defended his title shooting rounds of 73-76 for a 149
    total.

Dan Metzendorf of Medina and Tim Cebula of Beachwood finished
tied for second at 151 at Sleepy Hollow.

2010 Course Champion of Sleepy Hollow, Scott Heran of

Paul Woznicki has now competed in the course championships at
Sleepy Hollow in three different decades. He was champion in 2000
and has now qualified for the Greater Cleveland Amateur
    Championship ten times!

Cleveland State University senior-to-be Jonathen Riemer of
Lyndhurst fired at 3 under 68 to post a two-day total of 2 under
140 to win the Shawnee Hills Course Championship.  Riemer's
blistering round gave him a 4-stroke win over Marty Guest and
Zachery Bates, who tied at second with a 144.

Jonathen Riemer registered four birdies on the front nine and
a bogey-free back nine to win the day at Shawnee Hills.  He
started his golfing career in the youth leagues at Shawnee
    Hills.

The list is set for the Greater Cleveland Amateur Championship
54-hole tournament at Manakiki Golf Course on August 10 thru
    12.  Spectators are welcome to watch.

The four Cleveland Metroparks Golf Course Champions and
qualifiers have been decided (at Manakiki, Sleepy Hollow, Shawnee
Hills and Big Met).  Soon, the best amateur golfer of Greater
Cleveland will be crowned in Cleveland Metroparks - part of your
    life, naturally.
