When the snow falls, as it always does in Northeast Ohio, the Emerald Necklace shines with silver and white instead of gleaming in green. However, the 22,000-acre Cleveland Metroparks does not hibernate like some of its inhabitants. Instead, action abounds during the colder months in the Park District.
Winter enthusiasts can enjoy sledding, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, ice skating, winter hiking, and even tobogganing during the winter season!
Avoid cabin fever and feeling blue by taking advantage of the following cold-weather fun this winter in Cleveland Metroparks:
Sledding/Snowboarding enthusiasts can sled on a number of hills in Cleveland Metroparks at Bedford, Big Creek, Brecksville, Euclid Creek, Hinckley*, Huntington, Mill Stream Run*, North Chagrin*, Rocky River and South Chagrin reservations. Please use the sledding hills with caution and with proper equipment, and only when proper weather conditions exist. (*night lighting available)
Cross-Country Skiing is a great winter activity and cross-country skiing enthusiasts can ski the hiking and bridle trails of the Park District. However, skiers should exercise caution and must yield to hikers and horses. Cross-country skiing is also permitted at Mastick Woods, Little Met, Big Met, Shawnee Hills, Seneca and Sleepy Hollow golf courses' fairways and rough areas when there is a four-inch snow base. Trails are identified and groomed at both Big Met and Seneca and marked at Shawnee Hills and Sleepy Hollow. For cross-country ski conditions at the golf courses, call 216-635-3270.
Lake & Pond Ice Skating is a fun winter tradition. When weather permits, ice skating can be enjoyed at Hinckley, Mill Stream Run and Rocky River reservations. Skate with caution and only when proper weather/ice conditions exist, as these areas are not monitored. Skaters are responsible for clearing ice.
Ice Fishing is a perfect way to enjoy winter for true fishing enthusiasts. Fishing opportunities are available at Big Creek, Hinckley, Mill Stream Run, Rocky River and South Chagrin reservations. Several of these areas are stocked for ice fishing. For more information about ice fishing in Cleveland Metroparks, call 440-331-8017, weekdays. Please fish with caution and only when proper weather/ice conditions exist.
Winter Hiking provides beautiful scenic views. The winter landscape permits visitors to get a better view of wildlife activity during the winter months. Hike through nature's beauty on the all-purpose trails of Cleveland Metroparks. Plowing is planned for these areas when snowfall is two inches or more, and as time permits.
Tobogganing is the ultimate winter thrill! At the Chalet Recreation Area, the two, 700-foot refrigerated ice chutes operate with or without snow through mid-March, weather permitting. And, no more lugging the toboggan to the top of the hill with the brand-new toboggan lift! The Chalet Toboggan Chutes are located on Valley Parkway in Mill Stream Run Reservation, between Routes 42 and 82 in Strongsville. For more information on hours, admission and promotions, call 440-572-9990.
