The definition of the word tradition' is - an inherited,
established or customary pattern of a thought, action or
behavior. Cleveland Metroparks celebrating the buzzards
returning to Hinckley Reservation for 54 straight years - now,
that's a tradition!
As the story goes, in 1957, Walter Nawalaniec, patrolman (ranger)
for Cleveland Metropolitan Park System (now known as Cleveland
Metroparks), told a newspaper reporter that for six straight years
on March 15 he had witnessed turkey vultures returning to Hinckley
Reservation. The Cleveland Press printed the story on
February 15, 1957, and one month later on March 15 at 2 p.m. the
first buzzard was spotted by 9,000 buzzard enthusiasts. And,
the tradition continues.
Join Cleveland Metroparks Official Buzzard Spotter Bob
Hinkle (Cleveland Metroparks Chief of Outdoor Education) on
Tuesday, March 15 to welcome these remarkable birds back to Greater
Cleveland. Visitors from far and wide flock to the Buzzard
Roost in Hinckley Reservation to await the official spotting of the
season's first buzzard (turkey vulture) - a sure sign of spring's
return, as well!
Everyone is invited to celebrate the return with the following free
activities in honor of the buzzards:
The Annual Return of the Buzzards
Tuesday, March 15 starting at 7 a.m. -
Buzzard Roost Hinckley Reservation
Cleveland Metroparks Official Buzzard Spotter - Chief of
Outdoor Education Bob Hinkle has spent the past year exercising his
pointing arm and cleaning his binoculars for the annual return of
the buzzards. The buzzard watch begins right around sunrise
and while waiting for the turkey vultures (buzzards) to return,
visitors can enjoy over 54 years of buzzard spotting stories.
Die-hard buzzard fans should bring binoculars, cameras and, most
importantly, a sense of humor to the Buzzard Roost for the official
spotting of the season's first buzzard.
But the buzzard-loving fun doesn't end there. The celebrations
continue on Sunday, March 20 with the
