The Clean Beaches Coalition of Washington, D.C. announced on
June 2 that Cleveland Metroparks Huntington Beach in Huntington
Reservation is the first beach in Ohio and on Lake Erie to meet the
rigorous standards required at Blue Wave beaches. The Blue Wave
program is the first national environmental certification for
beaches and is implemented by the Clean Beaches Coalition.
The Blue Wave certification process is designed to help maintain
robust, healthy and vibrant beaches. ""The Clean Beaches
Coalition is proud to welcome Huntington Beach as the first
certified Blue Wave beach on Lake Erie. This designation is a
confirmation of the hard work and dedication delivered daily by the
Cleveland Metroparks staff, and their commitment to providing a
clean and safe environment for all beach goers," said
Walter McLeod, founder of the Clean Beaches Coalition.
The Clean Beaches Coalition performed a multi-tiered inspection
of Huntington Beach to determine its suitability to participate in
the program. The beach was measured against independent criteria
developed to assess the overall beach "experience." This
included principles that insured compliance with the highest
standards for the categories of superior water quality, universal
accessibility, commitment to beneficial safety practices, habitat
conservation, quality information and education, excellence in
service and maintenance, and proactive erosion management.
Cleveland Metroparks staff implemented many upgrades and changes
to improve the visitor experience as part of this effort, including
installing an information kiosk, new signage, improved debris
removal systems, and extended lifeguard operations.
The program would not have been implemented without the
assistance of Huntington National Bank. The bank sponsored the
application process and the reservation improvements.
