Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is popular with visitors of all ages, and to show its appreciation for the fans that are young at heart, the Zoo presents Senior Safari on Friday, August 26.
On that day, anyone age 55 or better receives FREE admission to the Zoo and The RainForest, plus access to an exhibitor pavilion featuring senior health, wellness and lifestyle information from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. including blood pressure and blood glucose screenings courtesy of Discount Drug Mart. Kaiser Permanente staff will be on hand to present a fresh fruit giveaway to early attendees, along with "Ask a Dietician" sessions, fitness tips, complimentary lemon water, a "Spin the Wheel" game and "Walk with a Doc" programs.
Seniors can get advice on staying physically fit during the free Silver Sneakers Fitness Program demonstrations. The group will do a muscular strength and range of motion demo at 10:30 a.m., followed by a yoga session at 1 p.m.
The Zoo welcomes back the Progressive Field Dixieland Band from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The RSVP Players drama group will perform in the Zoo's Exhibition Hall as well. The RSVP Players are a volunteer theatrical group from the Cleveland chapter of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. They perform educational, original plays that examine the ups and downs of aging with a sense of humor.
Guests can have a Get Close animal encounter on the Welcome Plaza, stroll through the Public Greenhouse to see the butterflies in FLUTTER!, and explore the new African Elephant Crossing.
"Senior Safari is a great opportunity to bring someone special to the Zoo and make some memories. It's not uncommon to see families with four generations represented posing for pictures in front of the animal exhibits," said Marketing and Public Relations Manager Sue Allen.
The Zoo has wheelchairs available for rent and a free tram service to take visitors to the Primate, Cat and Aquatics Building.
Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily with hours extended to 7 p.m. on weekends and holidays from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Admission is $11 per person, $8 for kids ages 2 to 11 and free for children younger than 2 and Zoo members. Parking is free.
