Kids can pick up a "passport" and travel recreation
activities and discoveries at the free, annual Cleveland Metroparks
"Outdoor Odyssey" event on Saturday, October 9 from noon
to 4 p.m. along the Ohio & Erie Canal in Ohio & Erie Canal
Reservation in CuyahogaHeights.
Children can pick up an Outdoor Odyssey "passport" at
the start of their journey. As the children complete a
station, they receive a stamp in their passport. When they
complete at least five of the activities and discoveries, they may
redeem their passport for a prize!
Some of the activities and discoveries children can experience
along their odyssey are fishing and fishing skills, golf skills,
other outdoor skills and demonstrations, nature crafts, and
more!
A
variety of nature and environmental organizations will also be on
hand with activities and displays. Kids can meet live animals
from Lake ErieNature & ScienceCenter, too!
One of the highlights at Outdoor Odyssey is the basic fishing
skills and techniques taught along the Canal. Children can
learn what types of bait the fish enjoy and how to bait their hooks
properly. After reeling in the "the big one,"
Cleveland Metroparks staff and volunteers will help identify and
explain the species of fish. Live bait and loaner fishing
equipment will be available. Participants should bring a
cooler and ice to store their "fresh catch of the
day." Fishing licenses required for ages 16 to 65.
The Canal is being specially stocked with rainbow trout and
channel catfish for the event. Fishing in the Canal will be
closed beginning Thursday, October 7 until the start of the
event.
Youth Outdoors, a division of Cleveland Metroparks, hosts the
"Outdoor Odyssey" event annually. Youth Outdoors is
a partnership between Cleveland Metroparks, 4-H, the City of
Cleveland, and The Ohio State University Extension. It makes
a difference in the lives of urban youth, ages 8 to 18, in outdoor
recreation and environmental education programs - by experiencing
nature, developing outdoor recreation skills, gaining a life-long
appreciation and understanding of natural resources, and learning
valuable life skills in achieving goals.
The
entrance to Ohio & Erie Canal Reservation is located on
Whittlesey Way, off E. 49Street, between Grant Avenue and Canal
Road in Cuyahoga Hts. - just off the I-77/Grant Ave. exit.
Follow the signs behind CanalWayCenter to get to the event site
along the Ohio & Erie Canal.

Every kid enjoys a prize, but they'll enjoy it more when they
earn one at the "Outdoor Odyssey" event of
Cleveland Metroparks - part of your life,
naturally!
