Variety of dogs and cats available at June 12 pet adoption drive

While the Zoo is home to a number of exotic animals, on one day each year it becomes a temporary haven for dozens of domestic dogs and cats in need of good homes. Those interested in adopting a pet should plan to attend the 10th annual Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo event, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 12, at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

The event showcases more than 100 adoptable pets from 20 local animal shelters and rescue groups. More than 750 cats, dogs, kittens and puppies have been adopted through Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo since its inception in 2001.

"Our goal is to find great homes for these wonderful animals," said Sue Allen, the Zoo's Manager of Marketing & Public Relations. "We really need people who are willing to provide the love and care these dogs and cats deserve."

Representatives from local humane organizations will be on hand to offer advice on how to choose the right pet for you and how best to care for it. Each shelter sets its own adoption fees and policies, and some require a waiting period.

The event is free and takes place on the Zoo's Ticket Plaza. For health and safety reasons, visitors should leave their current pets at home.

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is $10 per person, $7 for kids ages 2 to 11 and free for children under 2 and Zoo members. Parking is free. Located at 3900 Wildlife Way, the Zoo is easily accessible from Interstates 71, 77, 90 and 480.
