Cleveland Metroparks offers many great special events for all ages,
but the "Knee-High Naturalists" events focuses on the
younger age group!
Most kids want to explore and try new things, but are often told
they're too young. But not this time! Cleveland
Metroparks free annual "Knee-High Naturalists" event
encourages children, ages 2 to 6, to explore, play, learn, and
The "Knee-High Naturalists" event is on Sunday, June 13
from noon to 4 p.m. at the Arboretum (new location) in South
Chagrin Reservation in Bentleyville.
The free event features a variety of activities, giving budding
young nature-lovers the opportunity to explore, play, learn, and
more through nature exploration.
Some of the activities include:
� Hikes with "Nora the Explorer" -
Naturalist Nora Sindelar leads children on hikes, full
of nature discovery.
� Discovery Sand Box -
Plastic bugs, hand-carved potato bugs, earthworms made
of rubber hose, rubber snakes, and more are buried in the sand for
children to discover.
� Giant Habitat Felt Board -
Children have fun placing hundreds of animal images on
a 30-foot long felt board representing pond, field and forest
� Become a Butterfly or Raccoon -
Children can make their own butterfly antennae or
raccoon ear headbands.
� Beaver and Frog Pools Water-play Areas -
A small pool filled with water is home to a
family of "beavers" (beanie toys) and plenty of sticks
building a lodge or dam. Another small pool is
filled with toy snails, snakes, crayfish, and frogs in various
stages of development.
� Live Animals -
Lake ErieNature & ScienceCenter will have live
animals for children to see and touch.
� Touch Table -
Skulls and pelts to discover up-close, with a
naturalist on-hand to answer questions.
� Kite Flying Area -
Children can fly kites, try spinning some hula-hoops
and play with inflatable beach balls in the open field.
Families can also listen to entertainment from the ever-energetic
Mr. Hatbox with his original stories, songs, poems, and extravagant
There will be photo opportunities, too. Adults should be
sure to bring cameras to capture the memories.
And there's more! Bee and ladybug costumes for kids to borrow
and enjoy, an area for magnetic fishing to try their luck, a
Cleveland Metroparks K-9 Unit dog to meet, a roving
"chipmunk" character to see, and small trees to take home
and plant - all making this an event not to be missed! Light
refreshments will be available for sale at the event.
Parking for the "Knee-High Naturalists" event is at The
Shelterhouse Picnic Area, located off Hawthorn Parkway, east of SOM
Center Road/Route 91 in Bentleyville - north of the Route 422/Route
From The Shelterhouse Picnic Area, a ranger will help visitors
cross Hawthorn Parkway to the all purpose trail. Follow the
trail along Arbor Lane to the entrance of the Arboretum.
