Long before things were named Cleveland, North
Olmsted or even Cleveland Metroparks, the early settlers were
making Ohio their home.
Relive the sights, hands-on activities, smells,
tastes, and sweet sounds of great Americana music at Cleveland
Metroparks annual, free fall event - the "Cedar Valley
Settlers Celebration & Music Festival" on Sunday,
September 19 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at FrostvilleMuseum in Rocky
River Reservation in North Olmsted.
The nearly one-mile long Pioneer Trail
connecting FrostvilleMuseum and Rocky RiverNatureCenter
features crafts and activities, food sampling, live music,
pioneer toys, and more!
Sights -
pioneer-costumed folks and storytellers will be on hand to share
stories from the by-gone era. A
mini-encampment of a pioneer excursion camp is a part of the
festivities, too.
Hands-on Activities - try a
variety of pioneer skills and activities, including: candlestick
dipping, basket weaving, playing with pioneer toys, rug weaving,
butter churning, working the two-man saw, and more!
Smells and Tastes - sample a
potpourri of traditional foods, such as fire-roasted turkey,
biscuits with freshly-churned butter, apple cider, apple butter,
and more. Additional refreshments will be available for
purchase.
Sweet Sounds - event-goers can
listen to a great array of live entertainment from the Main Stage
at FrostvilleMuseum to Rocky RiverNatureCenter's Trailside Stage to
strolling musicians, all with toe-tapping music such as acoustic
folk music, Americana, blue grass, square and contra dance, and
more! Visitors can also enjoy the Dance Tent and Storytelling
in the Frostville Museum Chapel. Plus, instrument-builders
and 'how-to-play' areas will be set-up on the grounds.
Taking the Main Stage at 2 p.m. is 7-time winner
of the IBMA Bass Player of the Year Missy
Raines. Missy Raines & the New Hip bridges the musical
worlds of newgrass, jazz and any others they take a notion to
explore. Start with bluegrass virtuosity, add in a little
jazz-tinged groove and a song-driven sensibility, and then dish it
up with a hot band of young players. The band moves easily
from fun, funky instrumentals to sophisticated songs of longing and
hope.
Closing the afternoon on the Main Stage at 4 to
5:30 p.m. are the purveyors of the nu-folk and bluegrass movement
Crooked Still. Equal parts ambassador and
innovator as evidenced on their 2010 album release Some
Strange Country on Signature Sounds. The musical prowess
of this defiantly non-traditional bluegrass quintet is on display
on the new disc as radically re-imagined traditional fare
blends seamlessly alongside original compositions and a surprising
take on the Rolling Stones' "You Got The Silver."
