The best amateur golfers in Greater Cleveland were crowned at
the 2010 "Greater Cleveland Amateur Golf Championship"
(GCAC) on August 6 through 8 at Manakiki Golf Course in North
Chagrin Reservation in Willoughby Hills.
Brad Steven, of Concord Twp., won the GCAC with a 74-69-70--213
for a two-stroke victory. After posting the two-over-par 74 on Day
1, Steven was one of only three players to card two sub-par rounds
in the tournament.
The win places Steven with only one other player, Norton Brick,
to have won the Amateur Championship three times. Steven also
won in 1996 when the championship was played at both Big Met and
Sleepy Hollow and in 2007 at Sleepy Hollow. Steven also finished as
runner-up in 2008, losing in a 4-man sudden death playoff at
Manakiki.
Willoughby's Doug Barber used a 70 on the final
day to finish second with a 74-71-70--215, one stroke ahead of
David Sotka. Sotka entered the final round with a one-stroke lead
after postingback-to-back 71s on the first two days, but a 74 on
Day 3 placed him third with a 216.
The participants in the 17th annual
Championship were selected from Cleveland Metroparks Course
Championship tournaments at the four 18-hole courses (Manakiki,
Sleepy Hollow, Shawnee Hills, and Big Met) held as 36-hole, two-day
tournaments on July 24 and 25. Additional competitors were included
through exemption status and various regional
associationtournaments and qualifiers. The 54-hole, three-day
tournament is one of the largest amateur championships in Northeast
Ohio.
