A partnership between Cleveland Metroparks, Ohio State University Extention, 4-H and the City of Cleveland, Youth Outdoors strives to meet the developmental needs of urban youth living in the City of Cleveland through involvement in outdoor adventure and nature exploration activities.
By experiencing the wonder of nature and developing skills in outdoor recreation, young people, age 8 - 18, gain a life-long appreciation and understanding of the importance of natural resources. They also learn valuable life skills in making decisions, communicating thoughts and feelings, making healthy lifestyle choices, and fulfilling responsibilities to others in their group and community.
Children participate in Youth Outdoors through adventure clubs based at
City of Cleveland recreation centers and other urban organizations.
Through Youth Outdoors, Young People and Nature Connect
Our goal is to provide each Youth Outdoors Adventure Club ( a group of 10 - 12 youth) one outing each month throughout the year. Core activities include hiking, biking, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, camping, backpacking, snowshoeing, rock climbing, horseback riding, cross country skiing, team building activities, nature exploration and service projects.
To Get a Young Person Involved
A child or teen can become a member of an existing Youth Outdoors Adventure Club. Please contact the City of Cleveland Division of Recreation at 216-664-2561 or Youth Outdoors at 216-206-1010 to find a club nearest you.
To Form a New Youth Outdoors Adventure Club
Youth Outdoors staff work directly with individual youth-serving or faith-based organizations in the City of Cleveland to develop ongoing clubs that best suit the organization's and youth needs. Because of the many resources needed to provide outdoor adventures, a pilot series of outings is scheduled to assess a good fit for successful cooperative programs. The usual wait time for new pilots is at least four months.
With the support of Youth Outdoors staff, volunteer assistants help provide hands-on outdoor experiences for youth. We are always grateful for those individuals who are able to commit to helping our young adventurers learn new skills, discover nature and better themselves.
