LEARN ALL ABOUT FISHING WITH CLEVELAND METROPARKS

Summer will be here in no time, so why not get ready to do some fishing and take a course through Cleveland Metroparks Institute of the Great Outdoors (IGO)?

IGO provides a wide range of outdoor experiences to people of all abilities.   Participants will enjoy the knowledge and expertise of seasoned instructors with all IGO courses and have fun at the same time.   IGO helps people develop or enhance their outdoor skills, knowledge and environmental ethics.

            Among the variety of courses offered this spring, IGO is currently accepting registrations for the following fishing-related courses:

 

Fishing with IGO

Saturday, May 1 • 9 – 11 a.m. & 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.  -OR-

Sunday, May 2 • 1 – 3 p.m. & 3:30 – 5:30 p.m.

Hinckley Lake Boathouse • Hinckley Reservation • Hinckley Township

Take advantage of Ohio’s free fishing days with IGO at Hinckley Lake. Enjoy a day of fishing and learning new skills. Equipment and bait provided. Learn basic casting skills, fishing knots and fish identification. This program is for adults and children, ages 6 and older. There is a fee of $8 per person.

 

Take Mom Fishing

Sunday, May 9 • 9 a.m. - noon

Hinckley Lake Boathouse • Hinckley Reservation • Hinckley Township

Do something special for mom this year – take her fishing! Imagine her excitement as she reels in the big one! Equipment, bait and basic lessons provided. Participants, ages 16 through 65, require a current Ohio fishing license and must bring it to fish. If this is a new activity for mom, a one-day fishing license is available. To purchase a license, go to ODNR’s Division of Wildlife website www.wildohio.com. This program is for adults and children, ages 6 and older. There is a fee of $10 per person.

 

Fly Fishing Classes

Wednesday, July 7 • 6 – 9 p.m.

John J. Donnelly Rocky River Nature Center • Rocky River Reservation • North Olmsted -AND-

Saturday, July 10 • 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Sunnybrook Trout Fishing Club

Want to learn how to catch tasty trout for summer cookouts? Join instructor Bill Grake for an evening class followed by a full day at Sunnybrook Trout Fishing Club. Learn how inexpensive fly fishing can be and discover knot tying, lure selection, casting basics, and more. Equipment and lunch provided. There is a fee of $150 per person.

 

 

Near Shore Fishing Tactics

Saturday, May 22 • 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

John J. Donnelly Rocky River Nature Center • Rocky River Reservation • North Olmsted

Learn the secrets of fishing the near shore waters of Lake Erie with instructor Jeff Liskay. This course explores fishing opportunities available for small boaters or shore-bound anglers, and includes topics such as tackle selection, casting techniques, fish locating, and basic navigation. Learn proper boat rigging and launching procedures, too. Participants make a night crawler harness to take home. There is a fee of $20 per person.

 

IGO also offers equipment adaptation and assessment to make outdoor recreation opportunities available to all individuals, regardless of ability.

Some classes have prerequisites, including a level of proficiency and knowledge.
